To introduce textual phrases, chant (App. 4), usually in semibreves, permeates the imitative, polyphonic texture: “salve,” T, A, B, C, mm. 1-8; “illos,” T, B, A, C, mm. 36-8; “fructum,” A, T, B, C, mm. 49-52; and “nobis,” A, T, A, B, mm. 53-60. Plainsong also emphasizes specific words: “Ad te clamamus, B, m. 14 and “Et Jesum,” mm. 45-6. Cadences articulate textual phrases. A syllabic text setting prevails; melismas underscore “dulcedo,” T, mm. 8-10; “clemens,” B, mm. 65-8; and “Maria,” A, mm. 78-81. Final d; b-flats are included in the printed edition; however, editorial b-flats are required.
