[1] Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble SATBX

C-G2; Q-G2; A-C2; T-C3; B-C3. High clefs. Entire range, G-g’’. Chant (App. 4), usually in semibreves or breves, introduces textual phrases (e.g., “salve regina, “ mm. 1-17; “vita,” mm. 25-9; “in hac,” mm. 53-60; “fructum,” mm. 99-104; and “nobis,” mm. 106-13) pervading the imitative texture. On the other hand, chant serves as a cantus firmus in 2.p. assigned to Q for the text “Eia…oculus” and concluding verse 5 (“ad nos converte”) in C; similarly, chant associated with verse 7, “O clemens,” is assigned to C and verse 8, “O pia,” to Q. Not only are textual phrases or words distinguished through treatment of chant, but also by contrasting texture and rhythmic pace. The text “exsules filii hevae” in homophonic texture contrasts with surrounding contrapuntal material. To express “Et Jesum benedictum” Marenzio uses long note values and slow harmonic rhythm. Declamatory text setting prevails. Final g (1.p., 3.p.), d (2.p.), b♭ signature.

Description

Salve regina appeared in a modern edition by Hans Engel (Vienna: Universal Verlag, 1926) for which the editor did not indicate a missing A; either the original part was available or Engel composed an A. Engel’s realization of the A is the basis for the edition in CMM 72 (CMM 72, p. XIV).

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
