[1] Salve regina/vita dulcedo

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

D-G2; A-C2; T-C3; B-F3. Entire range, c-g’’. Alternatim setting; except for verse 5, the textual centerpiece, “Eia ergo…” in plainsong, all other verses are polyphonic settings. Chant,[1] usually cast in semibreves, introduces each pars including “vita” motto (mm. 15-18) within an imitative, polyphonic texture. Plainsong permeates the three-voice (D, A, T) imitative texture of “O clemens” (mm. 86—91), as well as the full texture of “O pia” (mm. 91-6), and serves as a cantus firmus (B) for the final verse, “O dulcis Maria” (mm. 96-105). Comparable to the above settings, “Et Jesum” (mm. 65-9) functions as a prelude to “benedictum…ostende.” The composer depicts “in hac lacrimarum valle,” the conclusion of 3.p., with descending stepwise movement, g’’-g’, followed immediately by d’’-d’ (D, mm. 56-64). Final g, b♭ signature.

1. The editor has included chant from the Liber Usualis rather than a 16th-century antiphonary (App. 4).

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
