D-G2; A-C2; T-C4; B-F4. Eleven alternatim Salve regina settings (SR154-SR165) attributed to J. Mangon share similar structural and stylistic features. The length of 1.p. ranges between 12 and 21 mm. (median, 15 mm.); 2.p., 13-34 mm. (median, 21) and 4.p., 8-11 mm. (median, 9.5). Pars 3 begins with a “prelude” between 3½ and 8 mm. in length, the final chord (D; only SR158 cadences on G) capped with a corona; the entire 3.p. extends from 18-28 mm. (median, 21.5). Plainsong is relegated to odd-numbered verses.[1] Chant quotations (App. 4) introduce each pars within an imitative, polyphonic texture; the chant motive concurrent with “Et Jesum” serves as a cantus firmus (D, A, or T)[2] in several settings. In settings of verse 8, “O pia,” plainsong most frequently appears in D. In some settings specific words (e.g., “nobis,” of 3.p.) receive emphasis through chant quotation or musical treatment to interpret the text (e.g., “gementes et flentes in hac lacrimarum valle”). To complement chant, “O pia” (4.p.) concludes on D. Paired imitation initiates 1.p. with “Salve” motto[3] in D/T. Final g, b♭ signature.

1. The editor has included chant from the Liber Usualis rather than a 16th-century antiphonary (App. 4).

2. In Salve regina settings of the late 15th and early 16th-c the “Et Jesum” motive was often presented in the lowest voice or an inner voice.

3. The slightly paraphrased motto (d, c, b♭, c, d, g = dotted semibreve, 2 semiminums, 2 minums, minum) recurs in SR155, SR158 and SR163.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
