A I-C3; Q-C3; A II-C3; T I-F3; T II-C3; B-F4. Entire range, A-a’. Range of three upper voices, g-a’; range of three lower voices, A-e’. Chant (App. 4) assigned to T I in equal semibreves, supports a dense contrapuntal texture; semibreve and breve rests punctuate words and textual phrases of the cantus firmus text. Except for anticipatory entries of the “salve” motto, a full-voice texture with overlapping phrases prevails. The ubiquitous “salve” motto usually makes a few appearances in antiphons that include the Salve regina plainsong; however, Lusitano seems to have been obsessed with the motto for it is quoted with text more than 140 times (e.g., “salve, nobis post hoc,” “salve, post hoc exsilium,” “salve, ostende,” A II, mm. 123-33). Only measures 78 and 116 are devoid of the motto. The word “mater” is omitted in verse 1, “et” in verse 2, but “virgo” in verse 9 is included in Q, T I (cantus firmus), and T II. Inconsistent use of declamatory style defines the text setting. Final d.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

Vita, dulcedo et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus exsules filii Hevae.

Ad te suspiramus gementes et flentes in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra, illos tuos misericordes oculos ad nos converte.

Et Jesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui, nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
