[1] Vita dulcedo

Polyphonic ensemble STX

[D]-C1; Ct-C3; T-C4, B-F4. Alternatim setting. Paraphrased chant (App. 3)[1] and plainsong quotations permeate the imitative, contrapuntal texture. “Vita” (“salve”) motto appears in long-note values (T, mm. 1-5) and Ct (mm. 5-9) with simultaneous chant paraphrase in S supported by free inversion in B. A brief passage (mm. 10-4) that explores invertible counterpoint precedes a repeated two-measure phrase (mm. 14-8) supported by two statements of “vita” motto” (B). Pars 1 concludes with paired imitation (S/A, T/B and S/T). Introduced by the “Et Jesum” motive (T) within a homorhythmic texture, pars 3 continues with a series of imitative duos all based upon plainsong. Text underlay is minimal concern. Final g (1.p., 2.p., 3.p.), d (4.p.); b♭ signature.

1. The source for the chant is most likely Cambrai, Médiathèque Municipale, XVI C 4 (ca. 1508-18), ff. 227v-8, or an antiphonary with a similar disposition of the plainsong.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
