Scores

Polyphonic ensemble SSAATTBB

Two contrasting choirs. Chr. I: A I-C2; T I-C3; T II-C3; B I-F3. Range, G-c’’. Chr. II: C I-G2; C II-G2; A II-C3; B II-C4. Range, d-a’’. “Salve” motto, as semibreves and breve, appear in B I (mm. 1-4) in identical disposition as in SR140 and 142; the remainder of the antiphon carries no chant influence. Salve regina verses or textual phrases are primarily differentiated through antiphonal treatment with juxtaposed or overlapping choirs; verses 3 (mm. 16-22) and 4 (mm. 22-8), and verses 7 (mm. 59-61) and 8 (mm. 61-3) alternate between Chr. I and Chr. II for their respective consecutive verses. For the remainder of the motet alternation of words (e.g., “salve,” Chr. I and “regina,” Chr. II) or phrases (e.g., “Et Jesum benedictum,” and “fructum ventris, Chr. II) dominates; alternation of specific words between choirs occurs infrequently (e.g., “illos tuos,” mm. 36-8; and “ad nos,” mm. 41-3). Tutti sections involve less than a third of the antiphon and typically emphasize concluding measures of verses (e.g., “et spes nostra,” verse 2, and “ostende,” verse 6), or of the antiphon (verse 9, mm. 63-9). Chr. I, harmonically independent, also supplies a foundation for Chr. II (mm. 13-14, 35, 44-5, 57 and 65). Declamatory text setting prevails. Final g, b♭ signature.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
