C I-C1; C II-C1; A-C3; T I-C4; T II-C4; B-F4. Entire range, D-d’’. No evidence of chant. Salve regina verses and textual phrases are defined by contrast of full-voice segments with three-and four-voice groupings and texture. Lassus evokes antiphonal treatment within a six-voice setting.

A homophonic style with limited independence of voices prevails; however, a brief passage of invertible counterpoint introduces “vita” of verse 2. The two invocations, “O clemens” and “O pia” display considerable voice independence. Minum rests between “ad te” and “suspiramus (C II and A) express the text as do the harmonic progressions that accompany “in hac lacrimarum valle,” (B♭, g, B♭, F, g, E♭, g, D); the B descends to D at the close of the phrase. Declamatory text setting prevails. Final g, b♭ signature.
