[1] Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble SSATB

C I-C1; C II-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Entire range, D-e’’. “Salve” (“vita”) motto as semibreves and breve appears in T (mm. 1-3 and 7-9) in identical disposition as SR140 and 146; the remainder of the antiphon carries no chant influences. Brief imitative passages introduce “salve” of verse 1 and “fructum ventris” within a texture that combines homophony with occasional contrapuntal activity (e.g., “salve,” “vita,” “O clemens” and “O pia”). The antiphon is full voiced except for two four-voice (C I, C II, A, T) segments (“salve” and “vita”) and a three-voice (C I, C II, A) passage associated with verse 4 (“Ad te suspiramus gementes et flentes”), a total of nine measures. To express the text, “in hac lacrimarum valle,” the B descends to D. Expressive harmonic progressions accompany the three invocations, verses 7-9. Declamatory text setting prevails. Final d.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
