[1] Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble STBX

D-C1; Ct-C2; T-C4; B-F4. Chant is limited to “salve” motto (Ct, mm. 1-2), its repetition for “vita” (B, mm. 5-6), “Et Jesum” motive (Ct, mm. 41-3 and B, mm. 43-5), “exsules filii” (T/B, mm. 14-6), “illos tuos” (T, mm. 31-2) and “nobis” (Ct, mm. 54-6). Salve regina verses and textual phrases are structurally delineated through contrast of duos and full voice sections. Overlapping duos constitute the format through the first half of verse 4 (mm. 1-22): D/Ct, verse 1; verse 2, T/B; D/Ct and T/B, verse 3, D/Ct and T/B, verse 4. Paired imitation (D/Ct and T/B, mm. 41-5) introduces 2.p. (verse 6). La Rue creates a symmetrical duo (T/B) for verses 7 and 8 defined by an eight-measure structure comprised of two four-measure phrases of which the second begins with the same material as the first but a whole step lower. The first phrase begins on d, cadences on g, whereas the second phrase returns to d. The entire structure is restated in D/Ct. The 2.p. in duple mensuration contrasts with triple mensuration of the 1.p. The words “mater” of verse 1 and “virgo” of verse are omitted. Final g, b♭ signature.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

Vita, dulcedo et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus exsules filii Hevae.

Ad te suspiramus gementes et flentes in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra, illos tuos misericordes oculos ad nos converte.

Et Jesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui, nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
