D-G2; Ct-C2; T-C3; B-F3. High clefs. Entire range, A-f’’. Alternatim setting. Chant prominently underscores particular words and textual phrases with long-note values: “vita” (D, mm. 1-9); “Et Jesum” (Ct, mm. 74-83); “nobis” (Ct and B, mm. 104-11); and “O pia” (T, mm. 136-41). Chant motives are usually surrounded by newly composed motives that permeate the texture. There is no evidence of chant in 2.p. scored for D, Ct and B. The presence of ostinati, (D/Ct, mm. 50-4 and Ct/B 55-8), passages in tenths and sixths (D/B, mm. 138-41 and T/B, mm. 141-3) and duo passages, characteristic traits of La Rue, frequent the texture. Except for the initial (“Et Jesum”) and concluding (“post hoc exilium ostende”) eleven measures scored for four voices, the remainder of 3.p. embodies a series of overlapping duos: D/T, mm. 85-95; Ct/B, mm. 95-104; D/T, 104-17; and Ct/B, mm. 116-24. Pars 4 in triple mensuration contrasts with the preceding three partes in duple mensuration. Text underlay is of limited concern. Final d for first three partes, a for 4.p.
