D-C1; Ct-C3; T-C4; B-F4. La Rue’s antiphon consists of two four-voice canons, one for each pars for which one voice (D in 1.p. and Ct in 2.p.) is notated; the voices are differentiated by clef signs and the varying number of rests that precede the entry of each voice. In both partes canon between D and Ct is at the interval of a fifth at the distance of two breves; T and B enter an octave lower after eight breves in 1.p. and nine breves in 2.p. Chant accompanying “salve regina” introduces 1.p. and “Et Jesum,” the 2.p.; the remainder of the melody is newly composed. Since the T/B duet follows D/Ct at a considerable distance, text of T and B may include a subsequent verse; verse 2, “vita, dulcedo…” accompanies T/B for their initial entrances. The words “mater” in verse 1 and “virgo” in verse 2 are omitted. Unfortuntely, a few dissonant passages mar the harmonic landscape (e.g., mm. 9, 17, 75 and 133). Final d; B cadences on D.

Description

The transcription in Trésor musical XVIII is incorrect. Maldeghem fails to close Pars 2 of the canon at the point indicated in MunBS 34, thereby creating an incorrect cadence on the dominant rather than the final of the mode, which is in accord with the cantus firmus (Maldeghem, 1882).
