[1] Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble SSAATB

C I-C1; C II-C1; A I-C3; A II-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Initial pitches of chant (App. 4) in long-note values introduce respective text verses in one or two voices (e.g., C I and C II of 1.p.; T and C II of 3.p.; and C I of 7.p. and 8.p.). Paraphrased chant permeates the texture of 4.p. (mm. 51-6). The opening measures of each pars involves imitation of chant or contrasting contrapuntal motives; a full-voice texture continues for the remainder of each pars. Symmetry of structure and contrast of voice groupings distinguish Kerle’s antiphon. Three groups each of three partes consist of a similar number of measures or demonstrate symmetry (7.p., 8.p., and 9.p.)

1.p.15 mm.C IC IIATB
2.p.17 mm.C IC IIATB
3.p.18 mm.C IIATB
4.p.24 mm.C IC IIATB
5.p.25 mm.ATB
6.p.26 mm.C IC IIATB
7.p.13 mm.C IA
8.p.8 mm.C IC IIATB
9.p.14 mm.C IC IIATB

A descending stepwise motive in each voice accompanies the text, “in hac lachrimarum valle.” The word “mater” is omitted from verse 1. Declamatory style defines text setting. To complement the chant, both 7.p. and 8.p. conclude on the dominant, a. Final d, several b-flats included in source.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
