Scores

Polyphonic ensemble SATBXX

C-G2; Sx-C1; A-C2; Q-C2; T-C3; B-C4. High clefs. Entire range, c-g’’. No evidence of chant. Textual phrases are distinguished through motivic material, texture, mensuration and expressive use of harmonic progressions. Within an imitative, contrapuntal texture, overlapping phrases define verses 1-4 (mm. 1-36) and the second half of verse 5 (mm. 44-57) that surround the first half of verse 5 (“Eia ergo…), the centerpiece of Salve regina, set apart in triple mensuration with antiphonal effects (mm. 37-44). Silence precedes verse 6, “Et Jesum…” Ingegneri repeats verse 9, “O dulcis virgo Maria” (mm. 74-80 equals mm. 80-6). Colorful harmonic progressions express specific textual phrases: “in hac lacrimarum valle,” g, E♭, A♭, E♭, g, D; and “O clemens, O pia,” d, B♭, A, D, g, E♭, D. A declamatory text setting prevails. Final g, b♭ signature.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
