C1-C1; C II-C2; T-C4; Ct-C4. “Salve” motto in C (mm. 1-2) is only vestige of chant in the antiphon. Within a contrapuntal texture, C and T form an axis while the angular Ct sharing an identical range (c-e’) with T functions as a “filler” voice. Hubertus’s Salve regina may be the earliest continental setting of the antiphon to include the trope[1] (verses 1, 2, and 4) but with a free interchange of lines 3 and 4 between verses 1 and 2. The three trope verses scored for C I and C II are most likely performed by solo voices; verse 1, “Virgo mater” is labeled “Unus.” Four-part writing (C I and C II in unison, T and Ct) defines the three invocations that are presumably for “chorus.” Salve regina verses 1-6 are in duple mensuration, the trope verses and three invocations (verses 7-9) in compound duple mensuration. Final d.

1. Hubertus included a version of Virgo, mater ecclesias with an interchange of lines in verses 1 and 2, but also variant lines 2 and 4 of verse 4.

Virgo, mater ecclesias / Hubertus

Virgo, mater ecclesias, / Virgo mater ecclesiae,
aeterna porta gloriae, / eternae porta gloriae,
esto nobis refugium / exaudi preces omnium

Virgo clemens, virgo pia, / Virgo clemens, virgo pia,
Virgo dulcis, o Maria, / Virgo dulcis, o Maria
exaudi preces omnium / esto nobis refugium
ad te pie clamantium. / apud patrem et filium.

Gloriosa Dei mater, / Gloriosa Dei mater,
cujus natus est ac pater, / quam elegit summus pater,
ora pro nobis omnibus, / ora pro nobis omnibus,
qui memoriam agimus. / laudem tuam cadentibus.

Glorious mother of God / Glorious mother of God
whose son is the father, / whom the supreme father chose,
pray for us all / pray for us all
who perform your memorial. / as we bow down to your praise.

Translation of verses 1 and 2:

Virgo mater ecclesiae, / Virgin mother of the church
aeterna porta gloriae, / eternal gate to glory,

apud Patrem et Filium. / before the Father and the Son,

O clemens! / O gentle one;

Virgo clemens, virgo pia, / Gentle virgin, virgin holy,
virgo dulcis, O Maria, / O sweet virgin Mary,

O pia! / O loving one;

Funde preces tuo nato / Pour out your prayers to your Son,
crucifixo, vulnerato, / crucified, wounded,

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
