[1] Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble

Tb-G2; M-C2; Ct-C4; T-C4; B-F4. Entire range, F-f’’. An unidentified cantus firmus[1] (T) embraces rhythmic gestures of other voices from “salve” through “ostende,” verses 1-6; “chant” associated with “salve…misericordiae” recurs a fifth lower with verse 9, “O dulcis Maria, salve.” The structure of the antiphon involves contrast between full-voice and two and three-voice sections as well as Virgo mater trope verses[2] that reflect a reduction of voices. Verse 1, “Salve…” begins with three voices (M, T, B) but at “misericordiae” is reduced to two voices (M, T) in florid style, a signature characteristic of the antiphon. Verse 2, “vita…” for two voices (Tb, M) continues in style of verse 1 but concludes full voice (“salve”). Marked contrasts define the trope verses and three invocations not only in number of voices but the increased floridity of trope verses; the fifth trope verse “Dele culpas miserorum”[3] replaces “Funde preces.” Brief imitative passages introduce textual phrases (“virgo clemens” and “virgo dulcis”) of the second trope verse. Triple mensuration with occasional presence of compound duple mensuration denotes verses 1-6 whereas duple mensuration characterizes the trope. Final g, b♭ signature.

1. The unidentified cantus firmus is quoted both in full-scored and reduced voice sections sometimes at pitch and transposed. Regarding layout of the setting based on the plainsong, see Frank Ll. Harrison, “An English “Caput,” Music & Letters, 33, No. 3 (July 1952): 203-14.

2. Virgo mater ecclesiae, / Virgin mother of the church
aeterna porta gloriae, / eternal gate to glory,
esto nobis refugium / be a refuge for us
apud Patrem et Filium. / before the Father and the Son,

O clemens! / O gentle one;

Virgo clemens, virgo pia, / Gentle virgin, virgin holy,
virgo dulcis, O Maria, / O sweet virgin Mary,
exaudi preces omnium / hear the prayers of all
ad te pie clamantium. / Who make their dutiful cry to you,

O pia! / O loving one;

Funde preces tuo nato / Pour out your prayers to your Son,
crucifixo, vulnerato, / crucified, wounded,
et pro nobis flagellato / and scourged for our sake,
spinis puncto, felle potato, / pierced with thorns, given gall to drink.

O dulcis Maria, salve. / O sweet Mary, hail!

3. Dele culpas miserorum; / Expunge the sins of the doomed
terge sordes peccatorum; / wipe away the stains of sinners;
dona nobis beatorum / give to us the life of the blessed
vitam tuis precibus. / through your prayers.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
