[Tp]-C1; [A]-C3; [T I]-C4; [T II]-C4. Alternatim setting. A Spanish version[1] of Salve regina supplies motivic material and serves as cantus firmus. Chant motives in overlapping points of imitation define the first two partes: 1.p., “vita dulcedo” (mm. 1-10); “spes nostra” (mm. 9-38); 2.p. “ad te” (mm. 39-47); “suspiramus” (mm. 47-54); “ in hac” (mm. 60-65); and “lacrimarum valle” (mm. 65-75). Franco makes use of a cantus firmus in the final two partes and includes chant motives in 3.p. and newly composed motivic material in 4.p. Except for “Et Jesum,” a contained imitative passage (mm. 76-85), the remainder of 3.p. comprises overlapping phrases based in chant (“benedictum,” “fructum ventris” and “nobis post hoc”) supported by a cantus firmus in T II with text “fructum ventris tui” (mm. 91-4) and “nobis post hoc exsilium ostende” (mm. 97-107); the word “ostende” initiates a final imitative passage (mm. 106-16). For 4.p. Franco assigns the cantus firmus (primarily in semibreves) to the Tp: “O dulcis” (mm. 117-23) in homorhythmic style and three statements of “virgo semper Maria (mm. 126-32 at pitch, mm. 134-41, upper fifth, and mm. 143-9, at pitch) supported by an imitative, contrapuntal fabric constructed from a newly-composed motive. A declamatory text setting prevails. Final d.

1. Franco most likely used the Psalterium, An[t]iphonarium Sanctorale (Mexico City: Pedro Ochate, 1584) or a closely related source; however, chant associated with “virgo semper Maria” reflects a Spanish chant version in Passionarium Toletanum (Alcalà de Henares: Arnoldo Guillén de Brocar, 1515). On the other hand, chant concurrent with textual phrases “gementes et flentes” and “O dulcis” may reflect a local practice. For transcription of Salve regina chant, see MRM 9, pp. 70-2.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
