[Tp]-C2, [A I]-C3; [A II]-C3; [T]-C4. Alternatim setting. A Spanish version[1] of Salve regina provides motivic material and serves as a cantus firmus. Anticipatory statements of “vita” (T, A II) introduce cantus firmus (mm. 5-23) in breves and semibreves; newly-composed motives associated with “dulcedo” and “spes nostra” pervade the imitative texture. Except for chant accompanying “gementes et flentes” (A II) and “in hac” (T) in breves and semibreves, chant motives are linked with specific words (“ad te,” and “suspiramus”) of 2.p.; a newly-composed motive juxtaposed with the chant permeates the texture (mm. 46-63). A migrating cantus firmus dominates 3.p.: “fructum ventris tui,” Tp, mm. 82-7; “nobis” T, mm. 89-92; and “post hoc exilium ostende,” Tp, mm. 98-100. The final seven measures are satiated with chant linked with “ostende.” Like the 4.p. of SR090 Franco assigns chant phrases “O dulcis” to Tp (mm. 107-15) and “virgo semper Maria” to A II (mm. 117-34) coupled with freely composed motives. A declamatory text setting prevails. Final d.

Franco most likely used the Psalterium, An[t]iphonarium Sanctorale (Mexico City: Pedro Ochate, 1584) or a closely related source; however, chant associated with “virgo semper Maria” reflects a Spanish chant version in Passionarium Toletanum (Alcalà de Henares: Arnoldo Guillén de Brocar, 1515). On the other hand, chant concurrent with textual phrases “gementes et flentes” and “O dulcis” may reflect a local practice. For transcription of Salve regina chant, see MRM 9, pp. 70-2.
