[1] Vita dulcedo

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

S-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Alternatim setting. Chant (App. 4) introduces 1.p., 2.p. and 3.p. within an imitative, contrapuntal texture. A slightly embellished “vita” (“salve”) motto in S and T initiates verse 2; however, a prominent “vita” statement in breves occurs in B (mm. 9-12). Similarly, the 2.p. and 3.p. begin with motives associated, respectively, with “Ad te suspiramus” and “Et Jesum.” On the other hand, a cantus firmus with chant (“O pia”) in longae and breves (S) overrides a contrapuntal fabric with text of verses 8 and 9. Episcopius also borrows from Pierre Sandrin’s chanson, Doulce memoire.[1] A motive attached to “en plaisir consommée”[2] introduces “et spes nostra” (m. 8, S and T). In addition, the S and B of the model (mm. 35-40) constitute the same voices of mm. 20-5 (“et spes nostra, salve”) for 1.p. and mm. 104-10 (“O dulcis virgo Maria”) of 4.p. A declamatory text setting prevails. Final d, b♭ signature.

1. CMM 47. No. 4

2. Doulce memoire en plaisir consommé / Sweet memory of consummated pleasure O siècle heureux qui cause tel scavoir. / O happy time that gives rise to such thoughts. La fermeté de nous deux tant aymée, / The strength of our love, [was] so great, Qui, à noz maulx a sceut si bien pouvoir. / It easily overcame our pain.

Or maintenant a perdu son pouvoir, / But now its strength is no more, Rompant le bout de ma seule esperance, / Dashing into pieces my only hope, Servant d’exemple à tous piteux, avoir / An example for all so afflicted that Fini le bien le mal soudain commence. / When joy ends, pain soon begins.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
