[S]-C2; [T]-C4; [Ct]-C4. No evidence of chant. “Salve…converte” text for two voices (C & T) comprises a primary upper voice supported by two lower voices with comparable ranges; occasionally, the T is coupled with the upper voice. Verse 6, “Et Jesum…” and the three acclamations (verses 7, 8 and 9) exhibit a homogenous texture with three texted voices for verses 7, 8 and 9; except for a brief passage, “illos tuos misericordes” for two texted lower voices, the lowest voice (Ct) is textless. The three stanzas of trope Virgo mater[1] for two equal texted voices contrast with surrounding material; silence between verses defines structure of trope stanzas. Sections in triple (verses 1-5, “Virgo mater,” verses 7 and 8, “Funde preces” and verse 9) and duple (verse 6, and “Virgo clemens”) mensurations enhance contrasts between Salve regina and trope verses. The words “mater” in verse 1 and “virgo” in verse 9 are omitted. Final C.

1. Virgo mater ecclesiae, / Virgin mother of the church
aeterna porta gloriae, / eternal gate to glory,
esto nobis refugium / be a refuge for us
apud Patrem et Filium. / before the Father and the Son,

O clemens! / O gentle one;

Virgo clemens, virgo pia, / Gentle virgin, virgin holy,
virgo dulcis, O Maria, / O sweet virgin Mary,
exaudi preces omnium / hear the prayers of all
ad te pie clamantium. / Who make their dutiful cry to you,

O pia! / O loving one;

Funde preces tuo nato / Pour out your prayers to your Son,
crucifixo, vulnerato, / crucified, wounded,
et pro nobis flagellato / and scourged for our sake,
spinis puncto, felle potato, / pierced with thorns, given gall to drink.

O dulcis Maria, salve. / O sweet Mary, hail!

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
