[1] [Salve] regina

Polyphonic ensemble STBX

[S]-C3; Ct-C4; T-C4; B-F3. “Salve” intonation (S). Paraphrased chant (App 4) is presented in S except for text “illos tuos” where it is in the Ct while S is silent (mm. 84-90); chant in long-note values appears as a cantus firmus in “O clemens” and “O pia.” Considerable voice crossing occurs between three lower voices, particularly the Ct and T that share the same range. Triple mensuration defines the 1.p. and 4.p., whereas the remaining partes are in duple mensuration. Text underlay of minimal concern to scribe. For example, the B is textless for the 1.p. except for a text incipit, “regina misericordie”; the Ct includes the text incipit “ad te clamamus” to introduce verse 3 and joins S and T to conclude verse 4 (“in hac lacrimarum valle”). Final d, a (4.p., 5.p.).

Description

Ascribed to Du Fay in Trent 89; authorship has been questioned by Karl Dèzes (1927, pp. 327-62). However, Fallows and Strohm doubt the conclusions of Dèzes(Fallows, 1982 p. 299), and (Strohm, 1993, p. 438).

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
