[1] Vita dulcedo

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

D-G3; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Alternatim setting. Salve regina chant (App. 4) introduces each pars within an imitative, contrapuntal texture; additionally, chant serves as a cantus firmus in long-note values with text “post hoc exilium ostende” (T, mm. 76-87) and for the 5.p. (A, mm. 88-96). Copus composes polyphonic even-numbered verses twice, first, in five partes with “O clemens” and “O pia” in strophic form, and the second time in 3 partes (“Vita dulcedo” “Ad te suspiramus” and “Et Jesum”) omitting the three final invocations. The inscription “in gratiam Arnoldi de Bruck 1550” introduces an antiphon setting that includes the Superius and text of the phrase “Cum sancto spiritus. Amen” from the Gloria of Josquin’s Missa de Beata Virgine[1] in the five sections of the first setting. Except for transposition at the lower fifth, this material duplicates the Superius of “Cum sancto spiritus” of Josquin’s Gloria that paraphrases the Gloria chant of Mass IX, for feasts of the Blessed Virgin (LU 43-4). The combination of this specific segment from Josquin’s Gloria with the Salve regina text emphasizes the admiration for the BVM, but also adds Josquin’s voice, a significant composer of the previous generation, to honor Arnold von Bruck and the BVM. Copus’s Salve regina shares triple mensuration and comparable rhythmic gestures with Josquin’s “Cum sancto spiritus”; however, melodic influence is negligible. The finale three partes (6, 7 and 8) in duple mensuration share motivic material with their respective counterparts (i.e, the first four partes) but exhibit less active rhythmic gestures. Final g, b♭ signature.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
