Polyphonic ensemble SATBXX

C-G2; Sx-G2; A-C2; T-C3; Q-C3; B-F3. High clefs. Entire range, G-g’’. Two equal C voices (C & Sx); range, e’-g’’. Two equal T voices (T & Q); range, f-a’. Chant (App. 4) accompanies each textual phrase either to underscore the text with long note values (breves and/or semibreves) or assimilate paraphrased chant into the imitative, polyphonic texture including a combination of both techniques (e.g., “salve regina,” mm. 1-22). The chant motive associated with “et Jesum” is embedded within the texture, first in B followed by a 5th above in T (mm. 157-9); on the other hand, plainsong concurrent with the three acclamations (verses 7-9) is defined in C (“O clemens,” mm. 194-203), Sx (“O pia,” mm. 204-10) and C (“O dulcis,” 210-14). Integration and development of plainsong motives constitute prime characteristics of the antiphon. A large scale tripartite structure defines the antiphon (1.p., 109 mm.; 1.p. 47 mm.; and 3.p. 67 mm.); “Eya ergo…,” the textual centerpiece (2.p.) contrasts with a reduced number of voices (C, Sx, A, Q), chant quotation primarily in Sx with brief references in other voices and a full-voice texture of independent voices. Contrasting voice groups (e.g., “benedictum” (Sx, T, B, mm. 168-171); “fructum ventris tui” (C, A Q, mm. 171-4); and “fructum ventris tui” (T, Q, B, mm. 173-6) emphasize the transparent texture and spatial elements. Brief full-voice texture segments appear in 1.p. and 3.p.: “Salve regina” (mm. 16-20); “gementes” (mm. 84-7); “lacrimarum valle” (mm. 106-9; “Et Jesum” (157-61); and “O dulcis virgo Maria” (mm. 220-4). Descending stepwise motion (A, T, Q, B) depicts the final textual phrase of 1.p.: “lacrimarum valle.” Final g, b♭ signature.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
