Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble SSATTB

[CI]-G2; [CII]-G2; [A]-C2; [TI]-C3; [TII]-C3; [B]-F3. High clefs. Entire range, G-g’’. Two C and T voices are, respectively, of equal range and interact with each other. “Salve” intonation. No additional evidence of chant. Textual phrases are differentiated through texture, reduction in number of voices, antiphonal treatment, independent sections and expressive harmonic progressions. Structurally, verses 1-5 (mm. 1-61) comprise an independent section as do the subsequent verses, all preceded by silence: verses 6 (mm. 63-92), 7 (mm. 92-5), 8 (mm. 95-8) and 9 (mm. 99-108). Two textual phrases, “misericordie” and “et spes nostra salve,” display imitation of motives in C and T voices, as well as antiphonal treatment (mm. 5-10 and 13-7). To conclude the antiphon Clavius includes harmonic progressions (g, E♭, c, g) that express the final acclamation, “O dulcis virgo Maria.” Declamatory text declamation prevails. Final g, b♭ signature.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
