Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble SSAATTBB

Two equal choirs. C-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4, Bc-F4. Bc is basically a basso seguente and not essential to the performance of the music. Chant (App. 4) influence is limited to “Salve” intonation (Chr. I, C) and quotation of plainsong in semibreves associated with “regina” (Chr. I, C, mm. 1-3). Textual phrases are defined through various antiphonal treatments, contrasts of texture, rhythmic gestures, and harmonic goals, typical style characteristics of a composition of the early 17th c. Verse 1, presented in Chr. I, comprises 6 mm., the first three with plainsong disposed in C and supported by two imitative, polyhonic voices (A/T); the remainder of verse 1 (“mater misericordiae” is cast in homorhythmic texture. On the other hand, the opening text of verse 2, “vita dulcedo,” as minums and semiminums is treated antiphonally (mm. 6-8). Subsequent sub-phrases (e.g., “ad te clamamus”) and textual phrases (e.g., “et Jesum…tui”) are treated similarly. The initial statement of verse 9, “O dulcis virgo Maria,” Chr. I (mm. 52-5) is restated (Chr. II, mm. 55-6). A full-voice texture of 8 independent voices concludes the antiphon (O dulcis…Maria,” mm. 58-61). Choirs are harmonically independent. Syllabic text setting defines this succinct antiphon. Final d.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
