[1] Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble SATBX

Q-C1; C-C3; A-C4; T-C4; G-F4. Quinta, labeled “si placet” is an optional voice. No evidence of chant. Textual phrases are delineated through cadential patterns, texture and harmonic rhythm. Homophony coupled with a syllabic text setting prevails; only “Eya…,” the fifth verse and centerpiece of the antiphon, exhibits an introductory imitative texture. Slow harmonic rhythmic and longer note values (breves and semibreves) articulate the final three acclamations. The responsory that follows the antiphon conforms with stylistic features of the antiphon. Final G.

R: Ut digni efficiamur promissionibus Christi. Make us worthy of the promises of Christ.[1]

1. Each of the four seasonal antiphons in Canale1575 include a polyphonic setting of the respective responsory (AR023, AC025 and RC045).

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
