Tb-C1; M-C2; Ct-C4; T-C5; B-F4. Entire range, F-e’’. No evidence of Salve regina chant. The antiphon Maria ergo unxit,[1] assigned to the Mandatum service on Holy Thursday, serves as a cantus firmus (T) in long-note values for the five-voice sections wherein it appears two times: the first six pitches conclude (mm. 3-7) the introductory “salve” but the remainder of the antiphon coincides with verses 4 through 6; Browne divides the second statement into three segments that, respectively, underscore verse 7 (mm. 105-17), verse 8 (mm. 145-56) and verse 9 (mm. 182-206).[2] Except for brief imitative passages at beginning of selected textual phrases (e.g., “vita dulcedo,” “ad te clamamus” and “salve”), a contrapuntal texture comprised of supple rhythmic gestures prevails. Contrast between the five-voice sections and two-and three-voice segments is characteristic of the antiphon and clearly defines the Virgo mater trope verses that precede the three invocations to Mary (See text and translation below). Verses 1-6 (mm. 104) display triple mensuration whereas duple mensuration characterizes verses 7, 8 and 9 and the intervening trope verses. Editorial text underlay is provided for trope as well as texts “regina…et spes nostra” and “ad te clamamus…Evae.” Final F, b♭ signature.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
