[1] Vita dulcedo

Polyphonic ensemble SSTTBX

D I-G2; DII-G2; Ct-C2; T [I]-C3; T [II]-C4; B-F4. Entire range, G-g’’. Alternatim setting. “Vita” (“salve”) motto in breves introduces each of the five lower voices within an imitative texture; the remainder of pars 1 appears free of chant. “Et Jesum” motive (B) is relegated to B in 3.p. Chant (App. 4) serves as a cantus firmus (T II) in 4.p. A second unifying device involves the quotation of the Cantus of Ockeghem’s chanson J’en ay dueil[1] at pitch with rhythmic integrity throughout D I of Salve regina; the complete melody is stated for the first two partes, repeated for pars 3 with the first section of the Ockeghem’s rondeau for 4.p. Limited concern for text underlay. Final d (1.p., 2.p., 3.p.), a (4.p.)

1. Ockeghem’s rondeau is available in Ockeghem, Johannes, Collected Works, Vol. 3, edited by Richard Wexler with Dragan Plamenac, (Boston: E.C. Schirmer, 1929-94), No. 7.

Je n’ay dueil que je ne suis morte / I grieve that I am not dead.
Ne doye je pas vouloir morir / Should I not wish to die?
Dueil a mon cuer voulu saisir / Grief seeks to seize my heart
Qui de tous biens me desconforte. / Which saddens me most of all.

Ma douleur est plus que trop forte / My sorrow is most heavy,
Car sans avoir aucun plaisir / For without any single pleasure
Je n’ay dueil que je ne suis morte / I grieve that I am not dead.
Ne doye je pas vouloir morir. / Should I not wish to die?

Je n’ay rien qui plus me conforte / There is nothing that can comfort me.
D’oeil ne foy plus que desplaisir / Nothing could please me more than death.
Mort est le plus que mon desir / Death is what I desire most
Car quelque chouse qu’on m’aporte / Of all that is offered to me.

Je n’ay dueil que je ne suis morte etc. / I grieve that I am not dead…

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
