Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble SSAATTBB

Two contrasting choirs. Chr. I: CI-C1; T I-C3; T II-C4; B I-F4. Range, G-c’’. Chr. II: CII-C1; A I-C1; AII-C3; B II-C4. Range, c-e♭’’. Baccussi’s two Salve regina settings share the inclusion of plainsong (App. 4) related to the “Et Jesum” motive (See SR030). The structural organization of the antiphon ascribes verse 5 as the centerpiece (Chr. II) surrounded by sections devoted to one or two verses articulated by tutti segments.

VersesMMTuttiMM
1 & 21-18“et spes nostra salve”14-18
3 & 419-37“ad te clamamus”19-20
“in hac lacyrmarum”33-7
538-51
651-65“Et Jesum benedictum53-8
7 & 865-71
972-81“O dulcis virgo Maria”72-81

Antiphonal responses are related by motive (“salve regina,” mm. 1-4), rhythmic gestures (“misericordiae,” mm. 4-8 and “vita dulcedo,” mm. 8-11), transposition (“ad te suspiramus,” mm. 24-30) and identical content (“O clemens/O pia,” mm. 65-70). A homorhythmic texture defines antiphonal responses of “miserecordiae” and “vita dulcedo” (mm. 4-11), “exsules…Evae” (Chr. I, mm. 22-24), and the tutti segment “ad te clamamus” and following response of Chr. II (mm.19-22); a texture of autonomous voices characterizes the remainder of the antiphon.[1] Final g, b♭ signature.

1. Baccusi composed an 8-voice choral response to the verse that follows Salve regina.
V. Ora pro nobis, sancta Dei Genetrix. Pray for us, holy Mother of God.
R. Ut digni efficiamur promissionibus Christi. Make us worthy of the promises of Christ.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
