Three contrasting choirs. Chr. I: C-C1 (?);[1] A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Range, G-d’’ (?). Chr. II: C-C1; A-C2; T-C3; B-C4. Range, d-d’’. Chr. III: C-C3; A-C4; T-C4; B-F4. Range, D-a’. Except for the presence of the “salve” motto accompanying the word “salve” in B (mm. 11-2), no further evidence of chant. Salve regina verses or portions of verses are delineated through antiphonal techniques. Asola explores contrast of tone color of the three choirs as well as various choir combinations. More than three-quarters of the antiphon is devoted to brief phrases (e.g., “salve regina,” mm. 1-3 and “vita dulcedo,” mm. 7-10) and complete textual phrases equally distributed between individual choirs; three choirs combine for the final textual phrase, “O dulcis virgo Maria” (mm. 70-5). Except for a recurring cadential pattern (d, c, A, B♭, A d) that appears in B of Chr. III (mm. 2-4, 17-9) or a variant (d, c, G, A, B♭, A) in B of Chr. III (mm. 31-3, 65-6)) and C of Chr. II (mm. 63-5), overlapping phrases of contrasting musical material prevails. To emphasize verse 5, the centerpiece of the antiphon, silence (minum) precedes and follows (semibreve) the textual phrase (mm. 27-39). Final d; several b flats (as well as c, f, and g sharps) are included in the printed source but editorial b flats are also necessary.

1. A photocopy of the antiphon from the Uniwersytet Jagiellonski failed to include C of Chr. I.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

Vita, dulcedo et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus exsules filii Hevae.

Ad te suspiramus gementes et flentes in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra, illos tuos misericordes oculos ad nos converte.

Et Jesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui, nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
