Polyphonic ensemble SSAATTBB

Two contrasting choirs. Chr. I: C-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Range, A-c’’. Chr. II: C-C3; A-C4; T-C4; B-F4. Range, G-a’. Chant is limited to “salve” motto in breves and semibreves, the subsequent plainsong accompanying “regina” (Chr I, C and Chr. II, T) and “Et Jesum” motive (B, mm. 65-6). Alternation of overlapping two to five-measure textual phrases between high and low choirs involves the principal structural device. Asola restates the entire texture associated with “Eia ergo” (Chr. I) a fourth lower (Chr. II), mm. 44-8; antiphonal treatment of other phrases (e.g., “salve regina,” “mater misericordiae” and “ad nos converte”) involves contrasting music materials. Tutti sections “ad te clamamus” (mm. 20-4), “in hac…valle” (mm. 38-43), “et Jesum benedictum” (mm. 65-9) and “O dulcis…Maria” (mm. 96-103) constitute about one-fifth of the antiphon; choirs are harmonically independent. Declamatory text setting with in predominantly homophonic texture prevails. Final d.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
