[1] Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

C-C1; A-C2; T-C3; B-C4. An altered “Salve regina” motto (a, g♯, a, f, e), cast as semibreves, introduces the antiphon (B) with overlapping imitation in C; however, the “salve/vita” motto (App. 4) accompanies “vita” (C) supported by the altered version (B, mm. 9-12). Within a homorhythmic texture of independent voices, verses are clearly distinguished through cadential patterns, silence, or character of material. Pars 1 comprises 3 sections: 1. verses 1 & 2, mm. 1-16; 2. verses 3 & 4, mm. 17-32; and 3. verse 5, mm. 33-45. Although silence separates the sections, the juxtaposition of chords at the conclusion of section 1 and beginning of section 2 (a to G), as well as of sections 2 & 3 (D to a) creates a striking contrast. The first pars of the Salve regina cadences on a. A syllabic style prevails in this contemplative setting of the text. Final d; b-flats are notated, but additional accidentals (b♭, f♯ and g♯) may be considered necessary.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
