[D]-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Chant (app 4), relegated to T as a segmented cantus firmus, is primarily cast in breves and semibreves within a contrapuntal fabric. D is entirely constructed of borrowed material from French chansons and German Lieder: T of Le serviteur[1] (mm. 7-103); Zu jagen (mm. 107-54); J’ai pris amours[2] (mm. 157-215); Glick walt der Reis (mm. 220-59); Wunschlich schon[3] (mm. 260-93); and Wes ich mich leid (mm. 294-328). Text incipits define the borrowed secular pieces in D as well as the Salve regina text in A and B; the T includes the entire text but with little attention to text underlay. Final d, b♭ signature.

Il me semble en prime estrenne; / It seems to me the best of gifts
Car apres dueil desordonné / That given so much outrageous grief
Sui fait par nouvelle alliance / I should be renewed by this alliance.

J’ay pris amours a ma devise / I have taken love as my standard
Pour conquerir joyeuseté; / In order to conquer joyfulness.
Heureux seray en cest’ esté, / Happy shall I be this summer
Se puis venir a mon emprinse. / Should I accomplish this.

S’il est aulcun qui m’en deprise, / If anyone should despise me for this,
Il me doit estre pardonné. / I must be forgiven.

J’ay pris… / I have taken love…

Il me semble que c’est la guise, / It seems to me that it is the custom
Qui n’a riens, il est debouté, / That one who has no such standard is
Et n’est de personne honnoré; / Disregarded and esteemed by no one.
N’esse pas droit que je y vise? / Is it then not righteous that I seek such a standard?

Description

H. J. Moser resolved the abbreviation Fer. Ar. as “Arrigo Ferrares,” a designation for Heinrich Isaac(Moser, 1966, 17 and 135). 
However, Martin Just in his dissertation (Just, 1961, 204-7), and Martin Staehelin (Staehelin, 1978, 18-9), doubt Isaac’s authorship.
