[1] Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble SATTB

[S]-G2; [A]-C3; [T I]-C3; [T II]-C3; [B]-C4. High clefs. Entire range, B♭-f’’. Chant (App. 4) motives permeate the dense imitative, contrapuntal texture. Remarkably, the initial “salve” motto is omitted though it introduces “vita dulcedo…” (mm. 20-24); instead, the descending four-note figure associated with “regina” appears in all voices (mm. 7-12) of the first textual phrase. To complement the two initial verses, Arcadelt restates the five-voice texture (mm. 1-17/19 equal mm. 20-40/43) wherein T I and T II exchange vocal material. Only initial pitches concurrent with specific words of verse 5 (“eya,” “advocata” and “illos”) relate to chant in the trio (2.p.) scored for T I, T II and B. Chant allied to “Et Jesus” is set apart with breves in A and T II (3.p.). “O dulcis” motive in breves and semibreves introduces verse nine “O dulcis virgo Maria” in T (mm. 60-3). The word “mater” of verse one is omitted. Text setting combines melismatic and syllabic styles. Final g, b♭ signature with e-flats in the source.

1. Salve regina settings by Beauserron, SR037, Josquin, SR127, Misonne, SR172, Palestrina, SR195, Praetorius, SR216, Reiner, SR225, Richafort, SR230, Sermisy, SR236 and anonymous settings SR339, SR349, SR358, SR376, SR382, SR393, SR395 and SR476 follow the same procedure.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
