(Partes 1, 3 & 4) C-G2; A I-C2; A II-C1; T I-C3; T II-C4; B-F3. Entire range, B♭-g’’. (Pars 5) Chr. I, C-G2; A-C1; T-C4; B-C4. Chr. II, C-C2, A-C2; A-C3, B-F3. Entire range, G-d’’. High clefs. Alternatim setting. Animuccia’s Salve regina reflects diverse techniques of chant (App. 4) quotations and variety of voice groupings. Plainsong in long note values introduces “vita” (“salve”) motto (S, mm. 3-8) and serves as a cantus firmus (S) in 4.p. (“O pia,” mm. 81-8). The melodic motive that introducces 1.p. (A II and A I, mm. 1-2) is identical to the opening motive of 2.p., based upon plainsong associated with “Ad te,” that permeates the imitative texture (mm. 26-31); chant concurrent with “in hac lachrimarum” also permeates the entire texture (mm. 45-55). An imitative, polyphonic texture prevails throughout the antiphon. A variety of voice combinations characterizes the antiphon: 6 voices for partes 1, 3 & 4, 4 voices (A I, A II, T I, T II) pars 2, and 8 autonomous voices in pars 5. Final g, b♭ signature, e-flats included in MS.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
