Polyphonic ensemble SSAATTTB

Two contrasting choirs. Chr. I: C [I]-G2; C [II]-G2; A-C2; T-C3. Range, d-g’’. Chr. II: A-C2; T [I]-C3; T II-C3; B-F3. Range, B♭-c’’. High clefs. “Salve” intonation in C I. No evidence of chant. Textual phrases or subphrases are defined through antiphonal treatment within a variety of textures including brief imitative passages, quasi-contrapuntal fabrics and homorhythmic style. Antiphony involves overlapping textual phrases (e.g., “regina mater misericordiae” (Chr. I) and “vita…salve” (Chr. II) or rapid alternation of brief phrases (e.g., “ad te clamamus”) culminating in a tutti (“exules…Evae”). Expressive use of harmony characterizes Anerio’s Salve regina. Traditionally, the words “et Jesum” are accorded special attention with longer note values; in this setting a succession of harmonies intensifies the affect: Chr. II (G, c, D) overlapped by Chr. I (D, g, A). Indeed, numerous accidentals (f♯, c♯, e♭, b♯) pervade the score of A 1080. The final phrase “O dulcis virgo Maria,” in triple mensuration, is first stated in Chr. I (mm. 63-7) followed by a varied statement in Chr. II (mm. 67-71) concluding with choral tutti (mm. 72-6). A declamatory text setting prevails. Final g, b♭ signature.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

Vita, dulcedo et spes nostra, salve.

Ad te clamamus exsules filii Hevae.

Ad te suspiramus gementes et flentes in hac lacrimarum valle.

Eia ergo, advocata nostra, illos tuos misericordes oculos ad nos converte.

Et Jesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui, nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
