[1] Salve regina

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

C-G2; A-C2; T-C3; B-F3. High clefs. Entire range, A-g’’. Within an imitative texture, “salve” motto (App. 4) introduces the antiphon (T, A, B, C); the remainder of the motet is free of chant influence. Textual phrases or sub-phrases are delineated through contrast of texture, mensuration and silence. Triple mensuration together with a homorhythmic texture defines verse 2, “vita…salve” in 1.p. (mm. 17-24), and “miserecordes…converte” in 2.p. (mm. 59-65). A short passage in invertible counterpoint (T/B=A/C) associated with “illos tuos” (mm. 54-8) contrasts with the prevailing independent full voice texture and the following section in triple mensuration. A period of silence (minum) in all voices separates “suspiramus” and “gementes” (m. 35) as well as the silence (semibreve) preceding “et Jesum” to emphasize the text; the descending stepwise motion in C, T, & B depicts “in hac lachrimarum valle.” Whereas third-related harmonies are not uncommon (e.g., G-B♭, mm. 65-6; g-E♭, m.69), simultaneity of f♯’ (A) and f’ (T), where appropriate voice leading suggests no alternative (m. 54), is unusual. Declamatory text setting primarily in syllabic style characterizes the antiphon. Final g, b♭ signature; frequent inclusion of e♭.

Salve, regina, mater misericordiae;

O clemens,

O pia,

O dulcis virgo Maria.
