Polyphonic ensemble STTBX

[C]-C1; Ct-C3; T [I]-C4; T [II]-C4; B-F4. Chant (App. 3) introduces each of the textual phrases; with the second, “quia…meruisti” and fourth lines, ”ora…Deum,” plainchant particularly permeates the imitative, contrapuntal texture. Equally important, an ostinato cantus firmus, “surrexit Christus” (“Christ has risen”), in T I provides symmetry to the antiphon. The musical pattern, consisting of three pitches (f, c’, d’), is stated eleven times in each pars but in retrograde in the 2.p. to enhance symmetrical structure. The repeated patterns are consistently separated by a breve, semibreve and minum; consequently, the1.p. and 2.p. are of equal length (respectively, 45 and 47 mm.); the 2.p. concludes with a two-measure cadential extension. Inconsistent placement of text characterizes text underlay. Final F, b♭ signature.
