[1] Regina celi

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

C-C3; A-C4; T-C4; B-F4. Entire range, F-g’. Chant (App. 3) serves as a cantus firmus (T) of partes 1, 2 & 4 and B of pars 3 in continuous breves; melismas associated with “letare,” “porta” and the final “alleluia” abbreviated. Plainsong also permeates texture with initial textual phrases. Contrapuntal voices consist of melodic/rhythmic motives comprised primarily of minums and semiminums. The trope, Alle Domine nate matris,[1] parallels the melodic and formal structure of the melisma of the final “alleluia” with a polyphonic texture for “alle…vivere” (5.p.); the entire texture is restated for “quam…pie” (5.p.). Textual incipits for non-cantus firmus voices characterize each pars. Final F.

1. Alle Domine nate matris Deus alme nobis confer praestaque vivere:
O Lord, born of a kindly mother, grant and give us life.

Quam [quoniam] te decet laus honor O Domine qui de morte surgebas rex pie:
Since praise and honor become you, O blessed Lord, who rose a king from the dead:

Fac nos tecum surgere, alleluia.
Let us rise with you, alleluia.
