[1] Regina celi

Polyphonic ensemble STX

C-F3; T-F3; Ct-F5. The inscription Ad Equales (same voices, i.e., Bassus) precedes the antiphon. Two equal voices (C & T) with identical ranges (G-d’) supported by Ct; entire range, E♭-d’. Chant (App. 3) serves as the motivic material that permeates the texture of 1.p. (C, mm. 1-7; T, mm. 4-10; and Ct, mm. 7-13), and 2.p. (Ct, mm. 22-28 and C, mm. 26-35), as well as a segmented cantus firmus (Ct) in 3.p. and continuous cantus firmus (Ct) in 4.p.; melismas associated with “letare,” “porta” and the final “alleluia” are abbreviated. Chant quotations are cast in long-note values (longae, breves or semibreves). Contrasting contrapuntal voices comprise rhythmic gestures of minums and semiminums. The trope, Alle Domine nate matris,[1] parallels the melodic and formal structure of the melisma of the final “alleluia” with a polyphonic texture for “alle…vivere” (5.p.); the entire texture is restated for “quam…pie” (6.p.); the concluding “alleluia” melody serves as a cantus firmus (Ct) underpinning two rhythmically active upper voices. Textual incipits characterize each pars. Final F; b♭ included in some staves.

1. Alle Domine nate matris Deus alme nobis confer praestaque vivere:
O Lord, born of a kindly mother, grant and give us life.

Quam [quoniam] te decet laus honor O Domine qui de morte surgebas rex pie:
Since praise and honor become you, O blessed Lord, who rose a king from the dead:

Fac nos tecum surgere, alleluia.
Let us rise with you, alleluia.
