Type

Motet

Scores

Regina celi

Polyphonic ensemble AATB

A-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. C and T carry the chant (App. 3) in canon at the lower octave and the distance of a breve; a considerable portion of chant melismas associated with “laetare,” “portare” and the final “alleluia” are included. Contrary to the usual practice of differentiating the canonic voices through long-note values, Willaert uses the same rhythmic gestures (predominantly minums and semiminums) in all voices. Chant exerts minimal influence upon A and B with the exception of “ora pro nobis” where the canonic voices and the A and B emphasize the text with long-note values (breve and semibreves) and the final “alleluia” melisma (cf. B, mm. 38-39 and 45-48). Declamatory text setting prevails in one of the few Regina caeli settings entirely in triple mensuration. Final F, b♭ signature.
