Two contrasting choirs. Chr. I: C I-C1; C II-C1; T-C3; B I-F3. Range, A-d’’. Chr. II: C III-C1; A-C3; T II-C4; B-F4. Range, F-c’’. Victoria clearly delineates textual phrases or specific words through contrast of texture, mensuration, antiphony and chant (App. 3) quotations. The initial three measures of RC212 appear in C II, T and B I of Chr. I (mm. 2-5), and restated in A, T II and B II of Chr. II (mm. 5-8); additionally, the motive attached to “laetare” in RC212 appears in Chr. I of this setting. Thus, appropriate plainsong motives introduce the four textual phrases and permeate the imitative texture. Antiphony involves alternation of textual phrases but also specific words; the identical second and fourth “alleluia” sections (respectively, mm. 38-54 and 107-121) entail rapid responses in homorhythmic style and triple mensuration. “Resurrexit…dixit” presented within an imitative fabric (Chr. I, mm. 55-64) is followed by a statement in homorhythmic style and triple mensuration (Chr. II, mm. 64-70) concluding with a full voice segment, a characteristic of a third of the antiphon. To intensify the petition “ora…Deus” Victoria traverses various tonal areas within five statements: F-C-F-g-D-g-F. Interrelationship of choirs most evident in mm. 103-7 (“ora…Deum”) and mm. 121-5 (“alleluia”). Declamatory text setting prevails. In V1435 (1600) an organ part was added to duplicate choir I. Final F, b♭ signature.
