Regina coeli

Polyphonic ensemble SSAATTBBXX

Two equal choirs. C-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4; Bc-F4. Bc is basically a basso seguente and not essential to the performance of the music. Chant is limited to the initial pitches associated with “regina caeli” (T of Chrs. I & II). Textual phrases are delineated through overlapping antiphonal techniques, contrasting mensuration and texture. Antiphonal responses involve overlapping repetition (e.g., “regina caeli,” mm. 1-3, and “ora pro nobis,” mm. 39-44), varied statements (e.g., “alleluia,” mm. 34-7) primarily with a texture of independent or homorhythmic voices. An imitative texture defines the final “alleluia” (mm. 43-50) culminating with a full voice texture (mm. 50-3). Several settings of Regina caeli within this catalogue include “alleluia” segments in triple mensuration; Soriano’s Regina caeli is the only setting to employ contrasting compound duple mensuration (tempus imperfectum cum prolatione perfecta) in this instance for the text “resurrexit sicut dixit” (mm. 21-5 and 28-30). Final F, b♭ signature.

Regina caeli laetare, alleluia;
Quia quem meruisti portare, alleluia,
Resurrexit, sicut dixit, alleluia,
Ora pro nobis Deum, alleluia.

The Trope:

Alle Domine nate matris Deus alme nobis confer praestaque vivere:
Quam [quoniam] te decet laus honor O Domine qui de morte surgebas rex pie:
Fac nos tecum surgere, alleluia.
