Regina celi

Polyphonic ensemble STB

C-C3; T-C4; B-F3. Entire range, F-f’. Relegated to the T[1] as a segmented cantus firmus, chant (App. 3), including all melismas, is stated primarily in semibreves; semibreve rests articulate textual phrases or specific words (“laetare,” “portare” and “resurrexit”). Outer voices (C and B) within defined ranges (C, d-f’ and B, F-b♭) and contrasting rhythmic gestures of minums and semiminums contrapuntally interact but seldom infringe upon the cantus firmus. Declamatory text setting combines melismatic and syllabic styles. Final F, b♭ signature.

1. Though the T is notated once (“Questo canto firmo serve per doi.”) in 1559|25, it is valid for both de Rore’s and Adrian Willaert’s (RC218) three-voice settings of Regina celi. The compositions share a number of similarities: range, length, interaction of voices, mode, as well as lack of chant influence upon C and B.
