Two contrasting choirs. Chr I: C I-C1; C II-C1; A-C3; T-C4. Range, c-e♭’’. Chr. II: C I-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Range, Chr. II, F-d’’. To emphasize text Rogier contrasts the four textual phrases through texture, rhythm, mensuration and use of chant (App. 3). “Regina…alleluia,” entirely allocated to Chr. I, introduces chant (“regina caeli”) in semibreves (A) followed with simultaneous imitative entries in C I as breves and semibreves and A in minums; new material within an imitative fabric completes pars 1 (mm. 1-11). “Quia…portare,” presented by Chr. II (mm. 12-17), includes the appropriate chant in C I and T within an imitative, contrapuntal context; the “alleluia” (mm. 17-27), treated antiphonally concludes on the dominant (C). The third textual phrase (mm. 28-40), within a homorhythmic texture consisting primarily of dotted semiminums and fusae, is treated antiphonally; chant in minums accompanies “resurrexit” (C I of Chr. II) and “sicut dixit” in semibreves (T of Chr. I). In contrast with the rhythmnically agitated 3rd pars, “ora…Deum” (mm. 41-53) commences with antiphonal petitions of “ora” in breves in all voices; for this and following entreaties (“ora…Deum”) only the motto for “ora” is included. The fourth textual phrase concludes on the dominant (C) in preparation for the final antiphonal “alleluia” that begins in triple mensuration (mm. 54-8) but continues to conclusion in duple mensuration (mm. 58-64). Declamatory text setting in syllabic style prevails. Final F, b♭ signature.
