Two contrasting choirs: Choir I: C I-C1; A I-C1; T I-C3; B I-C4; Choir II: C II-C1; A II-C3; T II-C4; B II-F4; Bc. A Bc including the lowest B voice and the highest C voice was added in the second edition, P 1976. Chant (App. 3) as a cantus firmus in long note values (breves and longae) accompanies “regina caeli laetare” in A I (mm. 1-5) and C I (mm. 5-16). Initial pitches of chant appropriate to “quia…meruisti” and “ora pro nobis” but in smaller note values permeate the imitative texture. Paraphrased chant in rapidly rising gestures of semiminums and fusae represents “resurrexit…dixit.” Textual phrases are defined through antiphonal treatment and contrast of texture, mensuration, motivic material and rhythmic character. A motive attached to “laetare” begins in Chr. I (m. 6) but continues for 15 mm. (in triple mensuration) to permeate the eight-voice texture. Comparable motivic material is applied to “portare” (mm. 28-34) and “resurrexit…dixit” (mm. 39-45). “Alleluia” sections primarily exhibit antiphonal treatment in homorhythmic style with varied repetition culminating in full-voiced tuttis. Choirs are harmonically independent. Final F, b♭ signature.
