Polyphonic ensemble SSAATTBB

[C I]-C1; [C II]-C1; [A I]-C3; [A II]-C3; [T I]-C4; [T II]-C4; [B I]-F4; [BII]-F4. Entire range, F-d’’. Chant underscores “regina celi” primarily with semibreves (T II and C II, mm. 1-6) surrounded by three motives that constitute an imitative network (mm. 1-5): motive 1 (A I, C I); motive 2 (A I, A II, A I); motive 3 (B I, B II, T I). Brief chant quotations articulate “quia quem” (T II, A II, B II, mm. 17-21) and “sicut” (B II, mm. 31-2). Full voice imitative, polyphonic texture defines the first textual statement, “Regina…alleluia” (mm. 1-17), and the final “alleluia” (mm. 38-48). On the other hand, a reduced number of voices distinguish “Quia quem meruisti” (3 & 4 voices, mm. 21-6) and “alleluia” (3 & 4 voices, mm. 33-8). A homophonic/homorhythmic texture emphasizes “sicut dixit” (mm. 30-3). The four “alleluia” sections constitute more than half of the antiphon. Syllabic text setting with occasional short melismas defines the antiphon. Final F; b♭ signature.
