Scores

Polyphonic ensemble SATBXX

C-G2; Q-C1; A-C3; T I-C4; Sx-C4; B-F4. Entire range, F-g’. Chant, primarily as semibreves, introduces “Regina coeli,” and initial pitches of “laetare” in C (mm. 5-9) and B (mm. 7-10) within an imitative texture; B states the quotation a 4th higher in mm. 13-7. On the other hand, only pitches associated with “quia” of line 2 and “ora” of line 4 are emphasized. Textual phrases are defined through chant quotations and contrasts of texture, rhythmic gestures and mensuration. Without influence of chant, the text “resurrexit dixit” emerges out of the previous “alleluia” section with a unifying rhythmic gesture (dotted minum, semiminum & two minums) appropriate for “resurrexit,” “sicut dixit” and “alleluia”; indeed, all three are stated simultaneously. Antiphonal treatment appears with the first “alleluia” section (mm. 25-34) and “Ora pro nobis Deum” (mm. 50-8). Triple mensuration in integer valor concludes the first line, “laetare,” that includes a motive (B, mm. 19-25) derived from intial pitches of the “laetare” plainsong melisma. Syllabic text setting prevails. Composers of Regina caeli usually cast the final line as the lengthiest section of the antiphon; the first line of Nucius’ antiphon “Regina…alleluia” (33 mm.), considerably larger than “Quia…alleluia” (8 mm.), “Resurrexit…alleluia” (7 mm.), and “Ora…alleluia” (16 mm.), constitutes more than half of the remainder of the antiphon. Final F, b♭ signature.
