Scores

[1] Regina coeli

Polyphonic ensemble SATBX

C-C1; A-C2; Q-C3; T-C3; B-C4. Chant (App. 3) quotations, primarily cast in semibreves, are most complete in C, Q and T in 1.p. and C and B in 2.p. for the four textual phrases; chant melismas (“laetare,” “portare” and ”alleluia”) are omitted. Contrapuntal material constructed of contrasting rhythmic gestures (e.g., a dotted minim followed by two fusae and a series of semiminums) intensifies the drive to the cadence of the 1.p. Except for brief passages of three or four voices, the antiphon is full voiced. Declamatory text setting prevails. Final F, b♭ signature.
