Full title / Other titles

RC142 Regina caeli 4 vv

Type

Motet

Scores

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

S-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. Chant (App. 3), at times set apart in semibreves (e.g., “resurrexit sicut dixit”), permeates the imitative, contrapuntal texture. Textual phrases are defined through borrowing of chant material, contrast of texture and cadential patterns. For the “alleluia” that follows “resurrexit…dixit” a three-measure phrase (mm. 46-49) for three voices is restated (mm. 49-52) with rearrangement of voices, first with chant in the B and then in T. A two-voice texture (B and A) with chant in the B introduces “ora…Deus.” The final “alleluia” comprises almost a third of the motet. Declamatory text setting prevails. Final F, b♭ signature.
